That’s a common misconception. Chameleons don’t actually change color for the purpose of blending in with their surroundings. It’s for other reasons, like to show that they’re in the mood for love.
Growing up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, I used to love keeping a tropical terrarium full of anoles, color changing lizards sometimes incorrectly called “chameleons.” I don’t know if it’s a psychic trick that anoles pull or just a psychological quirk of my own, but what ever color the creature is when I’m looking at it becomes in my mind its real, permanent, and only color. I can even watch as a bright green one transitions to dark brown, or vice versa, and still experience a kind of ontological certainty that “this one” is brown and “that other one” was green. The alternative is kinda scary-numinous.
I actually think it’s my mind rebelling against the uncanny reality of such a dramatic transformation before my very eyes. No, NO uncanniness allowed in my epistemologically mediated certainty! Why do you think they call them the Uncanny X-Men?
I’ve always been a little confused by Esther’s living situation. Are her parents around? Or does she have a (significantly) older sister acting as her guardian?

I’m assuming Esther’s chameleon will be like Poochie, and only called into existence when they’re needed for a joke.

Chameleons don’t provide good hiding places.

That’s an evil looking smile in that first panel. It makes it appear she has some sinister plan involving the chameleon.
