Our first test is the temperature. If they have a high temp, they stay home no matter what (actually, that’s school rules). Same with throwing up. Just feeling cruddy doesn’t generally cut it.
One of my kids spent a week complaining of a stomachache until I finally did two things:
Told him to prove it by throwing up or to finish getting ready for school.
Showing him an enema we had bought and telling him that if he was still hurting tomorrow, he probably had some blockage that needed to be cleared out and we would do so.
When I was 11, I lied to my Mom to stay home because it was raining for a week and I just wanted to stay in bed. She made me go to school that day. The rain had leaked into the attic and my ceiling fell onto my bed that day while I was at school. I never lied to her again to try to stay home from school.
If my kids were sick, they had to stay in bed–no TV, etc. Sometimes they decided they were well enough to go to school–(grin). Of course, I never sent them with a fever or anything obvious.
While this was re-posted 8yrs ago, right now we are in the midst of one of the worst flu out break since I think 1918 I believe. One thing they keep stressing other than getting a flu shot, if your kids are sick please keep them at home. Last thing we need is to cause an outbreak at school

After mom leaves the room, we’ll know for sure if he is faking or not…

We used to insist that the children prove they were sick… and sometimes they did!

Uh Oh! Spring flu. Elly’s in for it now. First Michael, then Lizzie, then John and she will get it. Not fun for the Patterson household.

He started feeling much better after that.

My head and stomach would hurt, too, after all that fighting, arguing, and yelling everyone did yesterday!

Maybe I was a bad actor.

Parents have a ‘sick sense’. I faked it a million times, no go. If I was really sick my Mom knew it right away.

Why assume it’s going to school? He could be sick after school and she’s surprised at him for willing to go to bed early.
