Some people have a permanent smile and some a permanent frown. How sad for the latter. I try to return with a smile whether it is a smile for a smile or a from a frown. A smile makes me feel cheerier however you look at it.
Oh poor Toad. I sympathize…time and gravity have done that to me too and now wearing a mask in public doesn’t help any of us. Just a smile doesn’t work, we need to verbalize our feelings. Like in the grocery store when a clerk rolls a freshly disinfected cart to you as you enter, I smile behind the mask and also say Thank You!
When I’m sitting at a bar, and someone asks if anyone is sitting in the seat next to me, I simply reply “Harvey.” Some, who are older, get the joke. Others don’t, so I explain the joke to them. I do tell them that, no, no one’s sitting there.
Not everyone has a face that wears a cheery grin … often, it’s not even conscious. We’re not necessarily “mad” or intentionally unfriendly; it’s just our normal expression. I’ve been told (too frequently) that I need to smile more … I patiently explain (again) that I’m not frowning – I’ve just got my face in neutral.
That said, Toad might avoid misunderstandings by answering Panda’s question out loud. “Sure, have a seat” is clear enough, no matter what your face looks like.

I love when I smile at someone with a grumpy face and they smile back and their whole face just changes.
