When we were in the Museum in NYC, there was a young man sitting on a bench in front of a Jackson Pollock totally rapt. Hubby got a wonderful picture of the teenager.

He’s not listening; he’s too preoccupied thinking about all the rich art investors he’s going to fleece.

Experimental art has something in common with joke telling.

Some jokes are good, some are bad… but people who don’t “get” them can’t judge.

And you can rarely guess who will catch on and who won’t.

I lived in a small Southern town in the late 1960s. I often visited art shows and exhibitions in art competitions. I kept seeing vibrant, lively, beautiful abstracts by someone who always signed with “SMAG.”

When I finally met SMAG… I found her, a Catholic nun named Sister Mary AGnes, to be funny, happy, and in love with art. Her theological take on her endeavors was Creation-centric. She said that if God is the Creator, and humans are created in the image of God, then humans are meant to be co-creators with God.

I later learned that J. R. R. Tolkien held the same notion… and deployed it in his elaborate world creations in The Lord of the Rings.
