My parents told a story from when I was a baby. One day they were digging clams on the beach, and an older woman approached and said, “Oh! I have the most wonderful recipe for clams! First thing in the morning, you give the clams to the maid. …”
My parents stopped listening at that point. We still sometimes say “you give the clams to the maid” to mean some important task goes on out of sight, as if by magic.
