Schroeder really does answer Lucy’s question, in Panel 3—you can tell what he says really is supposed to be a no. But she still insists that he come right out and say that “he really would miss her so-called SMILING FACE.” That’s unrequited love, for you, all right, but the one who wants “requited love,” will just keep on PERSISTING, until they get their wish.
