This sums up my dachshund, Scrappy, to a T. The guy I rent from lives above me. Every morning the landlord saves his dirty plates and pans for Scrappy to clean up. It has become quite the tradition.

I was in a bar/restaurant in NYC one time that was noted for being dog friendly, back when that was acceptable. It was a very busy night, the kitchen was backed up and the busboy ran out of space to set the trays of dirty dishes in the kitchen so he put them on the floor just outside the kitchen door. Sure enough, one of the dogs came over and happily started to pre-clean the plates. Many saw it but nobody complained.

I had a dog who was trained not to beg at the table. She would sit patiently by her food dis for the plates to be st down beside it.

The old prospector in AZ who had picked that calling to get away from  people made his monthly trip into town for groceries and found mail saying that his sister and her family were coming for a visit.

This was not  a welcome idea, so he made a plan…

The day they arrived, he greeted them, got them set up for sleeping. Then, he announced that supper was served. There were pie-tins nailed to the big outside table, and he served an excellent “prospector stew” with home-made biscuits. After supper he gave a loud whistle and his two dogs jumped up on the table and licked the pans perfectly clean. His sister was gone before breakfast the next morning.

A few months later, he was in town enjoying a beer when another prospector asked how the visit had gone. “Perfect,” he replied. “It was hard to train my dogs to do that, and it was hell  getting them to stop, but it worked like a charm. I doubt she’ll ever be back!”
