Do schools still do this? Kids should not be picking their teams, it’s always a popularity contest. They pick their friends and athletic kids first and the last ones are left feeling down about themselves or worse made fun of.
We did not have teams in dodgeball. There were two kids throwing the ball with everyone else in the middle. The last two out became the next throwers unless the last person could dodge ten throws. Then everyone got to go back in with the same two throwers.
There are major differences (and subtle nuances) between the games dodgeball, battle ball, bombardment, nine lives, and spud. But of course for MY money, the most complex childhood game of all was “kill the man with the ball”!
They probably do. I don’t think school endorsed bully ball….err…dodgeball is still done. If it is, those PE teachers should be tied spread eagle against a wall facing forward for a day each year for any of the students to come by and nail with dodgeballs filled to overpressure, no target restrictions no protective gear just like the students forced to play it. I guarantee that would be the last we’d hear of dodgeball.
When I was in grade school, dodge ball was one of the worst tortures “they” visited upon the klutzes such as myself. Mainly because it was sanctioned sadism, and there are always jock-types who are sadistic. There was also a variant called “Red Rover” that was better: You just let yourself be body slammed to the ground, and then you could be “out” until the top-jocks had dueled.

Would you call “not being picked last” a miracle?

still, Phoebe, what’s your point?

I remember always getting picked last. The popular kids weaponize everything.

Informing kids that you expected to be picked last isn’t helping your social status, Phoebe.

Declan…have to admit, hadn’t ever heard that name before. Not that there’s anything wrong with it, of course.

I didn’t care what “position” I got picked in. I was just happy I got to play at all.

I can’t tell if the kid that picked her is a boy or girl. Leaning towards girl, though.

Getting hit hurts? They must use the wrong kind of ball. It didn’t hurt at my school.

“last ones are left feeling down about themselves”. I would expect such drivel from some one named Flutter Pie.
