For some reason I keep imagining/reading his laugh like that of Phyllis Diller’s. Which makes him mildly more tolerable, though his jokes aren’t remotely in her league.
I know one thing: If this strip’s storyline doesn’t move on to something more entertaining by next week, I’ll leave it like I left Frog Applause a year ago! This guy’s jokes were good to begin with, but now like me, they’re getting old!
It feels like Mr. Scancarelli went on a vacation and left a new assistant in charge with a book of jokes from the 1950s and said “Just use this until I get back.” As greatful as I am to at least have a story that involves someone from the Wallet family, this isn’t even a story, but just one bad obnoxious pun after another. One week is tolerable, but it’s been going on for a month now. I guess if I was the one writing it, I may not be so critical. I’m sure it isn’t easy, so I’ll keep reading. Hope I didn’t offend anyone.
Does anyone here actually know how old this joke is? Someone here mentioned the 1950’s.
The first time I heard “canardly” was in the ‘70’s in a Saturday Night Live bit where it was in reference to a diamond. Apparently, it has been used in that context for a long time (jewelry shops, gem traders, pawn shops, etc.) as insider jargon.
“This is a genuine Canardly Diamond. It’s so small, you canardly see it!”
It is the kind of wordplay that was common in Burlesque and even Vaudeville. I can easily imagine Groucho using it if he had it.
I’ve always been interested in word and joke origins, but I can find nothing on this. If anyone has a clue for me, please post it. Thanks!

Where in the hell is this ridiculous and pointless story line going? This strip continues to widen the gap between great artwork and horrible writing.

Steve Allen used to tell a joke that his car was a Rolls Canardly. It rolls down onehill and canardly get up the next.
