Baldo: Gracie, I appreciate how you work at school and always think about your future. Dad: Baldo, I appreciat... uh... Baldo: Appreciate what? Dad: Give me a second.
Well, let’s see. He has a job. He never does anything illegal. He’s good to his family. And, more important than that, he’s the title character, and provides most of the punch lines for the strip.
I’m sorry to say that today’s strip is stereotypical.
Boys are often displayed with lesser values, and less effort.
Today’s strip may be stereotypical, but the character of Baldo is true to form… Honest, giving, caring, with the balance of his character leaning towards a virtuous life.
For the sake of the messages to the youth who read this strip, how’s about praising Baldo for trying. Not everyone can be a rocket scientist, but there are those who have an equal amount of integrity. And we need that as much as anything else today.
Today’s strip may be stereotypical, but it says as much (to me) about Baldo’s age as his gender. He’s not just a boy, he’s a teenage boy, and as such is about as much of a handful to Sergio as he’ll ever be (or has ever been).
That being said, as far as teenagers go I agree that Baldo is a Good One.
(I have a friend with a 17 year-old son, and while he’ll probably end up OK there’s no doubt that he’s “a little wild” at the moment.)
Teenagers today? He’s a better kid than most of us were. They’re about the same, on average, except for the whole “text” thing. Now you don’t have to listen to them as much.

Not everyone is meant to be an academic. He does work hard for what he wants, and he seems generally kind to others. Those are not bad qualities.
