This must have been the Riggs Vs Margaret Court match, which Riggs won. Four months later, he famously lost to Billie Jean King

Maybe Lucy should wait a few weeks before writing the letter…but then again, THAT letter may have been one to rub it in…

He was lucky, because he challenged Billie Jean King first. When she refused, Margaret Court stepped in. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Sexes_(tennis)

Or maybe this is referring to when Riggs appeared on “The Odd Couple” and kept beating Oscar to the point where he won everything of Oscar’s, including Felix. Then he beat them in doubles Ping Pong!

Just kidding. I know this is about the first tennis match. :-)

Peanuts has never been one for being topical, but I don’t know, this is pretty good.

As I recall from watching the King/Riggs match they had hybrid rules which should have helped King. Also he was not a top player at the time. TV stunt only. Had nothing substantial to do with equality of the sexes.

I thought it came out later, that Riggs lost on purpose to King? Something to do with gambling and money.

You are so right – I remember both Riggs and King well, but Court not at all.

In his later years. as a tennis hustler, he was always seeking a more challenging match. He played one match wearing a fully buttoned raincoat. And, in another match, he placed chairs on his side of the court. Anything to make the rube think that he had a chance of winning. Anything to bring in the next paycheck.

I met Riggs once, but it was on a country club golf course. He was terrible.

Schulz was an admirer and champion of King’s, and they became good friends along the way (I don’t know whether it was before or after the Riggs match).

Some “Battle of the Sexes” that was. 29 year old woman beats 55 year old man. Wow.Why is it that in these things they always stack the deck to start with? It’s like admitting they are not an even match. Should have put King up against a man who was not old enough to be her dad.

July 15, 1973, too early for the Battle of the Sexes. Ten weeks before should be sometime in early May or late April.
