Tatulli probably got the idea for this from a Twilight Zone story that had modern sailors (early 1960s) investigating a sunken WWII sub from which a mysterious banging came. They drained the sub, got inside and found the cause of the racket. [Spoiler Alert!!!] There were skeletons, and one of them had a hammer in his hand.
