I remember going to the Bronx Zoo when I was about 3. My mother took me to see the elephants and they made such an impression on me as being HUGE. I had the impression they were as big as the Goodyear Blimp! Of course, in future years when I would see elephants, I always thought they looked so SMALL because I would compare them to this first memory. EVERYTHING looks so huge to you when you are a child. It leaves a false perception of scale. Ever go back to your childhood home and think how SMALL it is?
When my daughter was about 8 months old we were at a family picnic. Someone brought their huge German shepherd and it came bounding over to my daughter, showed it’s very large teeth, and growled. She came to about the dog’s shoulder and had never seen a live dog before so it didn’t go well. She was terrified of dogs until she was 7 or 8 unless it was a stuffed animal.
We were at the Rochester Zoo about 40 years ago in the big cats’ building. One of the tigers let out a roar that shook the building! My youngest daughter (4 at the time) leaped into my arms, shoulder-high, from the ground. It was LOUD!!!!
