I agree on some parts of reality shows need to go. I do watch one that reduces the couples down to the wining one I enjoy. If this were ever to get canceled life would go on.
“Reality” shows must be the least expensive programs to produce. I mean, they don’t need writers, per se, they don’t have to employ actual professionals to do anything (except for the staff who record everything, and Nimrods don’t ask for anything better to watch. I’ve never watched one, and I never will…
That’s one problem: too many cable channels that need new programming, diluting the pool of good writers. More, those same channels get fewer eyes watching on average, so revenue per show is down. Result: shows that cater to the lowest and cheapest appetites.

Sound about right… Sometimes it has nothing to do with who does the best job, but the one who pulls the most sympathy votes.

reality shows tell me there are no longer any creative writers to do scripts

The more bad stuff there is on TV, the easier it is to read a book instead. And what’s wrong with that?

So–the dearth of good trash because of the oversupply of really rotten trash causes us to go for something better for us in the long run: reading.
