If you do it right, the stones sink like, well, a stone… but with no force. Now if you want to make a wonderful “cut throat” sound, you throw the skipping stone UP as high as possible, spinning as for a skip, but vertically. If all goes well, it hits the water exactly right and slices right in without making more than a tiny splash.
