‘After the stamp show’… you mean he didn’t want to go to the various panels, presentations, BOF* get-togethers, and other sessions? Between the cavernous exhibit hall and the likely dozens of sessions on multiple tracks, some thing like this can easily soak up an entire long weekend…
*BOF= Birds Of a Feather (people sharing the same really super narrow interest) impromptu sessions.
In re the subways: New Yorkers often can tell you in which car of the train to ride for any given stop so that you have a short walk to the exits. One of my favorite bakeries was in the B’way-Nassau St. station. I would always get two brownies (one for the long ride through B’klyn back to the Rockaways) when heading uptown on the Lexington Avenue IRT express. :-)
After we moved to suburban New Jersey I’d sometimes drive across the Arthur Kill into Staten Island to ride the ferry with friends into the city and back at 2 AM. You never knew who else might be riding with you.
I would be totally lost in subway tunnels if I had to travel that way. Never been on a subway.
Directions are my downfall. The only time I had any idea of direction was when we lived in San Diego because I always had a fair idea where the ocean was…..and I knew that was west.
Panel 3 is so sweet! (well, I guess 4 is too what with the cupcakes! Darn, now you’re making me crave the chocolate buttercream frosting on Magnolia Bakery’s Bleecker Street’s cupcakes!)

Sometimes the wrong turn results in more fun and interesting discoveries. And the cupcakes look good, also.

I have a pretty good sense of direction normally, but underground I get totally turned around…thank goodness most subway systems have maps.

Any day that ends with a cupcake is a good day.

You definitely saved the best for last. I hope they had plenty of icing and sprinkles on them.
