Why is Nancy dropping water balloons on Sluggo (if that’s what those are supposed to be), and why was Sluggo NOT living with his uncles? Did Child Welfare send him to stay with Fritzi?
1. OJ is making a nod here to the “trucker uncles” who were an addition to the comic by the more “country-western” prior artist. That suggests she may be bringing those two back. Why on Earth?!?
2. Is OJ suggesting that Sluggo is going to be “written out” of the comic?!?!?!?! I sure as hell hope OJ is not planning on doing this. That would be very sad, indeed. I think OJ’s Sluggo has brought a needed calming influence to Nancy at various times. Why would she want to get rid of his character?
3. Now, for today of course…. the “miss you” comment also refers to her current practical joke on Sluggo…. if Sluggo does MOVE at all, she will miss him with the cavalcade of water balloons.

So, overall… I like the joke for today and it gave me a good, rueful chuckle. But the mention of the “uncles” has me quite perplexed and a bit nervous. And, truth be told…. it looks like to me, that Nancy should have more robustly filled the water balloons…. they look like they could very simply bounce around and off of Sluggo without breaking…. to get a good water balloon “SpLaT !!!” they need to be filled with a great deal of water to make the balloon taut. Nancy’s look more “half-filled” and jiggly and bouncy. :)
Sluggo moved in with Nancy in the April 20th comic presumably due to the quarantine. He’s not getting written out of the strip. He’s just going back to living in his own house after quarantine ends.

I’m still deeply suspicious of this “uncles” business, though surely OJ has earned trust at this point.

Since when is Sluggo moving back to his uncles? And since when does he officially have uncles? Did I miss something?

It’s so much easier to not miss him when he’s there sitting on the bullseye.

Nancy is so sweet! Sluggo is lucky to have a friend like her*.

The comic would not be the same without Sluggo.

Hmm. Sadly confused on many levels:

Nicely composed. Panels 2-4 show the same scene, but the “balloon surprise” is concealed in panel 2 by a different kind of balloon.

Nothing says love like a water balloon on the noggin.
