OK … totally serious. Degas was one of the original “Impressionist” painters. Judging from the date it appears this painting was created about a year before the first ‘Impressionist’ exhibition in Paris which took place in 1874. If anyone reading this is interested in the story of the Impressionist (Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Pissarro, etc) movement there is an EXCELLENT BBC movie – not documentary – in three parts on You Tube starring Richard Armitage for free. Just do a search at You Tube for “The Impressionists mini series”. It is one of the finest and most beautiful productions I have ever seen and can also serve as a crash course in Impressionism.

Degas always started his works with the door in the room and his work is noted for their exquisite realism. And for the impact the brandy he consumed while painting the door had on the rest of the painting…
