Most of the retail stores I go into these days have a sign at the door saying there is a coin shortage, so please use exact change or a credit or debit card. Lately my conspiratorial mind is wondering if that’s all part of a plot to do away with actual currency and coinage, so there will be a record of absolutely every purchase you make. If they really wanted more quarters to circulate they could get rid of the multiple designs they put out each year hoping people will take the coins out of circulation and save them in a little blue book. It only costs 36 cents to make a dollars worth of quarters, so the other 64 cents is profit to the government. Multiply by hundreds of millions of quarters produced each year, and you’re talking pretty good money.
I participated in a focus group considering a form of digital money where your balance would appear on a screen at checkout. No PIN or identification required. It would have been a boon for muggers who don’t like to carry cash.
