To tie the two panels together: I once read (I forget where, but a credible source) that the crash sound on the original studio recording Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Boxer” was made by putting a mic in an elevator shaft, in which a piano had been hung (though I guessing a spinet, not a grand…..) and swung against the wall.
I have not confirmed this to be true – but I really hope it is!
