takes good to be back home again (though the farm didn’t feel like a long, lost friend)

Better enjoy those gestures of welcome Mike. Your parents aren’t going to be around forever, you know.

It is funny how family continue to refer their infant member as “baby” until they grow older and resembles a human. I found myself referring my grandkids as “baby” when they were born until they begin to try to communicate, talk, walk…around 18 months old. Mike still calls his sister “baby” and I am wondering how long he will continue until April reaches the point she transforms into a human.

I don’t think I have seen the whole family together someplace before that wasn’t their house. Michael may be a little surprised to learn that when they get to the car, he may be riding in the trunk with whosever luggage it was he picked up (obviously not the luggage he had yesterday.)

When I was 15, I flew to visit my sister in Texas. When I came home, my parents greeted me at the airport. My mother’s greeting: “Your sister-in-law is pregnant again, and we have a 16-year-old runaway living with us.”

Yup. It’s nice to see a familiar face when you arrive home. Even if they embarrass you a bit. It is always a bit more lonely when you get back and no one is there.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Things will get back to normal, soon enough.

I seem to recall that some of my families send-offs and welcome-homes at the airport, train, or bus station were cringe-worthy for a teenager who desperately wanted to be independent. Later, I valued them.

As one of my sons say “Mom, I might need that kidney later”. Only thing which might be as good as a son’s hug is a grandson’s squeeze around my waist during Covid. Yes, I was able to see part of the family for a patio dinner twice. No one else is close enough.

One of the reasons I love this strip is the heartwarming things we see today. Lynn always tried to portray real family dynamics, with a touch of humor thrown in.
