I think Red is underestimating the distance to the Earth’s core. Maybe he’s seen too many sci-fi films about travelling to the Centre of the Earth. I remember that “At the Earth’s Core” and “Where Time Began” came out in the mid-1970s so they may be within the time-frame of this nostalgic comic strip.
That kid wasn’t paying attention to his teacher during their Earth science lessons. Heck, he wasn’t paying attention during the B-movie marathon of ATTACK OF THE MOLE PEOPLE, RETURN OF THE MOLE PEOPLE, and SON OF THE MOLE PEOPLE.
I never knew our (late) little female BC did that until I went out on the deck one really hot day, looked down, and there she was in all her ermine-coated beauty, happily ensconced in a shallow broad pit of cool, newly-dug earth under the hollyhocks, happy as a clam and cool as a cucumber.

So Red does pay attention in Earth Science? I thought most kids that age thought you could dig a hole and come out in China!

C’mon Red! Rover knows that for the first fifty feet or so the ground temperature does go down quite a bit before it starts climbing back up.

Red needs to understand just how far down that is.
