I did this in real life, about 10 years ago — revisited my home town and stopped at the house where I grew up. We stayed on the sidewalk, but the new owners noticed and came out after a couple of minutes. When I told them why I was admiring their home (they’d made a lot of improvements my folks had never had the time and money for), they invited us inside.
It was lovely! The best part was that they’d enlarged and improved the kitchen, which my mother had always wanted to do. I thanked them enthusiastically and we wished each other well.
when i was 15 growing up in RI, i spent the summer in CA with my grandparents, and they took me by my first house in Oxnard where i was born…all there was, was three steps…but still got the picture
