I was once landing an airplane at Clark Field in the Philippines. They were reporting a runway condition reading (measures traction) of 5 which is normally associated with an icy runway.
The condition was awarded because it was rice bug swarming season. Patches of the runway were black with hundreds of thousands of the critters. Rice bugs are like cockroaches on steroids – they are about as big as a bug can get.
My first visit to Hawaii, I visited a friends house where a cockroach flew up at me from the floor and I almost passed out! Previously I had only seen crawlers…… “it’s paradise for the bugs, too” her father said….

Haw! Speak for yourself, cowardly one. I destroy cockroaches with ease, whether they fly or they scoot.

Never mind their wings. Their size is sometimes enough to get me running. . .

They do? I never knew that. I’ve only ever seen them crawling on floors or up walls.

Orkin writes that American cockroaches aren’t regular flyers.

In Florida, we have Palmetto Bugs, which are cockroaches on steroids. They are huge, they fly, will eat almost anything, and are totally gross.
