I remember when TV dinners were quite the thing. They even had special “kid’s meals.” In highschool, our history teacher had come to the Midwest from Philadelphia, where he had worked in the Swanson’s factory. He told us stories that put us right off ready meals forever!
Chuck must have been kept back a couple of times. By the early strips he was older than Lucy who was older than Linus yet here he seems to be in the same classroom with Linus. Continuity took a back seat to the story in this one.
I remember those TV dinners by Swanson. It made me leery of the microwave dinners of today. But today’s microwave meals for the most part are quite good. Can’t say the same for those TV dinners in their aluminum containers, that you then popped into a 350º F oven for 30 minutes.
I thought Linus was younger than CB .. but apparently, since they share the same classroom, they must be the same age, unless, Linus (boy genius), skipped a couple grades.
I wonder what TV dinner Linus is planning to bring in: Banquet, Morton, Nighthawk, Swanson or perhaps the Hungryman if this strip came out after Swanson brought that product out???? My guess is Swanson fried chicken or perhaps one of the meals where you have to peel back the foil to make sure the tater tots get crispy…..
Googling the name “Othmar”, which seemed vaguely familiar, I find that among other things there was a Saint Othmar. He was a man, but Mrs. Othmar could use the patience of a saint.
I remember my elementary school attempts at a “hot lunch”. I’d make myself some plain spaghetti with butter & Parmesan cheese, and put it in my Thermos. While it wasn’t cold per se, it wasn’t exactly hot; closer to lukewarm.
I ate TV dinners, on a TV tray, in front of our 50’s TV. One thing I always thought, even as a kid, was that those dinners were way too small in portions, and I was still hungry after eating it.
My high school the Home Ec. classroom was accesible either by going outside and in through the greenhouse (never did understand why there was a greenhouse when it was never used for growing anything, was probably used before I started there) or by going through the cafeteria. And about 99.8% of the time the only way it could be accessed was through the cafeteria. Seniors had the option of eating out in the cafeteria or in the Home Ec. classroom (no Home Ec. classes were scheduled for the Junior-Senior lunch period), which also meant we had the option of being able to bring stuff that could be heated in the microwave just as long as we cleaned up any mess we made. Was good to be a senior. Might have been slightly better if I actually brought lunch in to school rather than buying my lunch at school.

Had it been a few decades later, would Linus ask to microwave his lunch?

Linus, it’s not a good idea to fall in love with your teacher.

I think Linus cooked up that question just to get poor Miss Othmar all heated up!

My first school if I brought a mason jar of soup for lunch the teacher would heat it up for me.

I would love to see the upset and confused Miss Othmar’s expression. This lad’s question is intriguing.
