I fought against that back in the 90’s I told the state director of education that kids need an unstructured block of time to allow their imaginations to flourish among other reasons. The result was that they only tried year-round for one group. I think it was middle school. Since this put way too much stress on parents with more than one child, it failed.
Year round school means that the students are split up into four groups and have staggered starting times but all have a school year consisting of 4 quarters of 9 weeks school and 2 weeks vacation and every one gets two weeks more for winter break and 6 more at the end of their year for “summer.” Originally designed for overcrowded schools this proved difficult for families with more than one child as school districts at first did not grasp the idea of synchronized schedules to allow for family vacations. It has since gone out of favor. The school year in the USA and most other countries follow the agrarian year with time off during the summer growing and harvest season. It’s more energy efficient for the school to have the winter time off, but schools have been built for the present calendar since the building of schools so we are stuck with it. As it is, my daughters left school early, in March, and have continued distance learning and are considering taking next year off as a gap year with the possibilities of getting internships with the provincial government. Or hanging out at home. Kids, meh.
