There are two books out called The Next Pope. One is The Next Pope: The Office of Peter and a Church in Mission by George Weigel. The other is The Next Pope: The Leading Cardinal Candidates by Edward Pentin.

I had to stop reading this wonderful comic due to the fact it is impossible to enlarge in order to read the text, sob, sob.

I read my comics on the computer. I do have to click on this one to read because the print is smaller. But that also lets me read the comments. Sometimes they are as funny as the comic.

I am going to preach to you from the Gospel according to an Air Force Pilot: AKA Sermon from the Cockpit about the parable of flight pay.

Being a pilot sounds like a glamorous profession and many parts of it are. But it is not an easy road to travel.

First of all there is pilot training which lasts the better part of a year and although life is a lot easier as a commissioned officer student pilot than it was as an aviation cadet in WW II, it’s still not great working conditions. Every day is a 12-hour day and at one point in my training, we were getting every other Sunday off.

Then there are schools. Once (if) you get your wings you go from one school to the other, some of which have to do with flying some are “extras” like survival school – a part of which is to be a student POW – it’s like looking at the real thing from 10 miles away through a telescope, but it’s not a pleasant experience.

Then there are evaluations, exams and check rides of all descriptions.

They send you to places like Korea where you freeze your butt off in the winter and the Philippines where you sweat your butt off any time of year. They send you places where people don’t like you and shoot at you.

Family separations are frequent, and the prospect of permanent separation is all too real.

For all this, you get extra money in the paycheck at the end of the month. That extra money is not worth all the B.S. you have to put up with to get it.

There is only one reason pilots fly: they love to fly.

So if you are a Christian who lives to die and go to heaven, I say you’re doing it wrong. There is only one reason to be a Christian: you love being one.
