I remember when Netflix mailed you DVDs. I remember the first ‘streaming’ where you basically downloaded a movie. Internet speeds weren’t up to the task yet. Heck! I remember using dial up and tying up my phone line for 3 days to download the demo of Doom, which was GASP! FOUR floppy disks in size! (That’s just over 4 megabytes for those oof you who’ve never seen a floppy disk!)

At a show yesterday—BareFuzz at Kenny’s Westside in Peoria—their drummer plugged his laptop into the soundboard with a network cable and recorded the entire show with all 18 tracks which he will mix down to stereo before posting it on Bandcamp.

In 1972, the Grateful Dead recorded their European tour with state-of-the-art 16 track reel-to-reel equipment that was squeezed into a mobile recording van that followed them from venue to venue.

    Technology can be wonderful.

In 1849, French writer Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr wrote

“plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose “

    – the more things change, the more they stay the same…

“The more things change, the more they stay the same” and “There’s nothing new under the sun” refer more to us and our attitudes than it does to technology.
