I just read Tony Hillerman’s short (non-fiction) story “We All Fall Down” – about the Black (Bubonic) Plague. The Pastuerella pestis is transmitted by fleas from rodents to humans (perhaps through pets). _ In 12 hours, one can become 60 billion. Antibiotics kill the bacterium, but the dead bodies release toxic substances that destroy the linings of blood vessels. Thus, it must be diagnosed and treated very early. _ It was found in rodents at the outskirts of my town this week.

Plague is less than uncommon in squirrels in the Rockies, & is less common in Europeans since they learned to bathe.
