I remember out of control offsite office parties in the 70s and 80s, and a valuable piece of advice one of my managers gave me early on. He said that there would always be some higher-ups who drank too much and made fools of themselves, and that you would not want them to later remember that you witnessed their embarrassing antics. He said the trick was to leave the party unnoticed before any of that began — leave your coat in the car if necessary, and leave quietly. It was usually not an option to simply not attend. I was just first level management, and attendance was expected.
