    Speaking as a (former) teacher, the gifts I appreciated most were gifts for the classroom – a book for the in-room library, craft supplies, etc.

    Reminds me of The Choate School – They were so proud of the fact that all graduating 6th Formers (you do want your diploma, don’t you?) made a contribution to the alumni fund. Charged to your parents of course. 1956 – the first, last and only time I gave anything to Choate.

    At my child’s school, they hit you up at the beginning of the year for a teacher gift, so it’s too early to form an opinion. Pretty sneaky…
