Buy him Tuesday. It’s a picture book, but a little sci-fi.

Neil Gaiman has a children’s book on pirates coming out soon … right up Doug’s alley

Either are good. Or some of the kid-friendly Hiaasen’s.

As a kid I started with ERB’s Tarzan books, which lead to his John Carter of Mars. From there, Heinlein, Asimov, Clarke, Bradbury, and all the rest.

What, no Louis L’Amour? How can he grow well rounded without knowing of the Sacketts?

I was always a bit more of a Bradbury fan myself…

This sounds like me, though. Too many a times have my family gone to the local mall and I spent nearly all of the trip in the Barnes and Nobles, looking through the books. :D

I wonder if Doug’s second word will be “Mush!” ☺

I’m trying to identify the book held in panel three… “Dacaw Jumper,” is it? I think I might be reading the title wrong, though, as I’m not getting any hits on such a thing in my searches for it.

I’d pick out 10 books with the kids and set the books and kids in the middle of the adult mystery aisle. Then I’d fill up my basket with 10 almost random mysteries before taking the crew to the checkout counter. Key to the mission was choosing a row with a favored author and picking the books off the shelf in order from where I last stopped. Also key was to be done within 3-4 minutes and and during an uncrowded time.

At least you had your priorities straight and looked for Heinlein first. “Number of the Beast” was better, but try his first draft “Pursuit of the Pankera” different take almost as good.
