I told them over a year ago that I was going to retire at the end of 2020. They still haven’t found anyone who wants to do my job. Oh well…not my problem!
When I was working, employees were categorized as ‘Type A’ and ‘not Type A.’ Everyone wanted Type A’s—the ones on the fast track, the ones who were ‘goal’ oriented. Problem was, this classification system was created by doctors to identify who was likely to develop stress-related health problems, not intended to classify employees. And, even among the Type A’s, there is a difference between those who were personal-goal oriented and those who are company- or project-oriented. I observed many A’s vault their way up the ladder and out the door. I saw some promoted so fast they didn’t have time to learn anything about the projects themselves; and, when they got to the top, they couldn’t function effectively. I saw projects that took three times as long because of leadership changes every few months—which resulted in new priorities and new procedures because every new leader had to make his/her mark ASAP. [Was it really important to change all documentation from Times New Roman to Ariel font?] Me? I was project-oriented. I was the one who stayed with projects from start to finish, smoothing out the road bumps, double-checking everything, and making sure the project accomplished what the customer wanted. I didn’t get promoted very fast or very far, but I also never rose beyond my level of competence. I am proud of the work I accomplished, but have little respect for my old employers. I didn’t even bother letting anyone (except HR and the head honcho) know I was leaving.

I’ve a hunch G.B. is the Pluggers own creator whereas Rick must be his protégé to whom to hand over the comic in the future.

Just for the record, that G.B. isn’t me.

What’s annoying is when you finally get to the point where the new hire understands the job, so they quit.

Well… how else is a rookie supposed to learn? Books/schools are a good start but they aren’t everything.

I gave nine months notice prior to retirement. My last day on the job, management hadn’t even started interviewing replacements.

Sending all my love and happy thoughts during this transition. I’ll be with the strip no matter what. I’m a plugger through and through.

If you hadn’t noticed R McKee has been doing about half the Pluggers for months now.
