Things you need that you don’t need to learn in school: Reading – WTF! Never heard of emojis? Writing – dictate to Siri. Arithmetic – “Alexa – what’s 2+2?”
HA! That was then….this is now! Parents can’t even HELP their kids anymore….they have made it so hard and confusing it’s ridiculous. Common Core sucks!
Algebra is about the rules for solving an equation. It is NOT about quadratic equations. Teachers just use quadratics because they have multiplication/division, addition/subtraction, parentheses, and exponents so a whole bunch of rules get used at one time.
Every single time you perform a mathematical operation you are using algebra. All your life, probably every single day of your life you will use algebra.
As grandparents.. One with a BA.. even elementary school stuff was beyond our comprehension.. never mind trying to help them. That new math is not compatible with a slide rule.. or an abacus.
I am so sick of people that joke that “math is hard” and “when will I use it”. We use it every day in problem solving even when it doesn’t appear to be math. As a culture I would like us to stop saying such as it places a stigma on math that shouldn’t be there.
The problem with math is that it’s taught for theoretical completeness which fills classroom hours, but not applicability, which requires a level of knowledge they don’t have time to teach.
The joke about finding your X comes to my mind when I’m analyzing a set of chromosomes and literally have trouble finding the X, especially in a set of female chromosomes. One of the Xs is nice and clear, the other is “late-replicating”, which means it might not unfurl completely at cell division and can be distorted.

Chances are, if you use this stuff in real life, you will be getting paid very well.

See “Saturday morning breakfast cereal” 11/5/17. A favorite of my math teacher relatives.

Knowing algebra is key to finding buried loot. X marks the spot.

PEMDAS == parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction.

I remember that 2 + 2 = 5 for very large values of 2, but these days it’s all about solving for why.

Let’s see, with a bit of math one might be able to get a better understanding about statistics and see what this “pandemic” is really all about.

The eyelids had me baffled for a bit. Now, if the glasses were not positioned at the tip-top of the nose, but instead perched about halfway down …

Or you might CONCEIVABLY have to buy quantities of three different things on a limited budget, duh.

There’s x and y, and there’s x and y not.
