This sounds like a family tradition when I was a teen.
My dad’s family were sharecroppers when he was growing up – starvation-level, work all day (except during school hours) type farming. Naturally, he and all his siblings got out as soon as they could, and construction work was where most of them got their starts.
Well, they mostly all had kids, and no one wanted the next generation to go back into farming, so construction jobs after HS were pretty much mandatory. This was to teach us that we had OPTIONS. My brother was the only one who went into construction, the rest of us learned better.
The point of this ramble concerns my own bit of construction experience. My parents got a great deal on a house on a lake here in Florida, mainly because the house was a dump. So daddy planned it out, and we started building the new house, and disassembling the old (to make demolition easier).
Things I will NEVER do again:
1. Dig a foundation
2. Haul concrete blocks
3. Pull wire for electricity/phone/cable
4. PULL UP A NASTY OLD BUG-EATEN CARPET!!!!! AAAARGHH!!!!
The rest of it was OK, not fun but OK. But that carpet – summer in Florida by a lake means HOT, HUMID, and bugs EVERYWHERE!!!
You two have my deepest respects for doing this for Dan’s father. Your place in Heaven should be assured for that alone.
Did I forget to mention the mildew? And the BUGS??

The reason they charge for everything is so they can afford the private jet that they fly to Hawaii on every other month.
