I fell into a vat of chocolate
I fell into a vat of chocolate…
I’d like to know the original publication dates on these, not when they were re-released in the 90’s or whatever. It would be interesting. So, is this a standard old joke or is this comic where the Smo-Bros got the idea for the song? Or vice-versa?
Have M & J been employees in this chocolate establishment long, or just long enough to tell this joke? It makes me think that perhaps Al Smith heard the Smothers Brothers’ Chocolate song first, since he was still drawing it until the early 1980’s. However, he was signing his name to them throughout the 1950’s and early 60’s too, so Pat Paulson (who apparently wrote the bit) could have read this first too.
This is an old gag. It was used once in the comic strip “Abie the Agent” in the 1910s – he slipped into a garbage heap and yelled “Fire” instead of “Garbage” – but it might be even older than that.
My favorite instance of it is a TV episode of “The Abbott and Costello Show” (1950s), when Lou accidentally got Bud’s feet stuck in a tub of cement; Lou was smart enough to know that nobody would come if he yelled “Help, cement!”
…Herb , as for the original publications , I have seen topical references within the strips:
As early as the first United Nations Confrence , in San Francisco .
As late as post-the Beatles/” longhair ” rock’n’roll bands in general becoming well-known in the U. S.

Now I know where the Smothers Brothers got the idea from.

Heard that joke when I toured the Hersheys factory in Hershey PA in 1970.
