When I was younger and the children were young we always had a dog and a cat. There was one stage when we had four cats. Three of them were rescue-cats. Our dog, a cross miniature terrior and Jack Russell, loved to play with the cats. The big ginger one used to play catches with the dog running around the rose bushes. It was very funny to watch, visitors used to think that the dog was chasing the cat but it was often the other way round. They stopped when they were tired and came inside to lie in front of the fire place.
My sister had a cat move in with her. She found out he really belonged across the street, and went to speak with the owner. When the owner saw which cat it was, he said “Oh, that one? Sure, keep him.” And my sister decided it would be best for everyone, cat included, if she did. Her husband and girls already liked this cat. Unfortunately, his name was Butch but she didn’t change it. They had Butch for about 10 more years, I seem to recall.
It would have been funnier to show Fred in panel 3 in a more assertive position, thinking, “And here I thought Saturday’s strip would be the end of the cat story arc.”

You should have seen the smiles on peoples faces when our cat, almost daily, joined our dog for his walks.

The cat probably has a good home and just came over to play. Go with it Fred. You are not going to be replaced.
