My physician friend told me that when he served in the navy they would sometimes prescribe “obecalp” to sailors that were acting ill in order to get out of some nasty duty. Obecalp = “placebo” backwards.

Placebos help sort out the ineffectual. I would that we had these in the halls of government.

People that are told they are being given a placebo sometimes say the reaction is the same as if they were given the real medicine.

Contrary to popular belief, placebos don’t actually provide medical improvement. That idea comes from patients who perceive their own symptoms as improved, simply because they expect improvement. But when symptoms are actually measured, there is no change.

(For example, an insomniac who takes a placebo instead of a sleep drug may say that they fell asleep faster and stayed asleep longer. But when measured, they’re taking just as long to fall asleep, and waking up just as often during the night. Always be wary of self-reported effects.)

The Russians are racing to develop a harmless placebo vaccine, so they can “win” the vaccine race and convince their people to go back to work until the “real” vaccine arrives. We have something similar going on.
