Aunt Fritzi: Nancy-----Go to the fruit store for a coconut---And pick out a GOOD one.
Nancy: Oh, dear---I'm no expert on coconuts.
Signs read: COCONUTS
Nancy: Mind if he picks one out for me?
About sixty million pounds of coconuts are harvested every year. There are a few documented cases of death by coconut falls, but less than one a year. Also, overindulgence in coconut water has been known to render an individual unconscious due to excessive potassium in the bloodstream… but there seems to be only one known case. More common, but still statistically rare, there are cases of bacterial infection from raw coconut water and from falling coconut palms.
A couple of times in Brazil I had the good fortune to find street vendors selling chilled coconuts still in the outer husk. You’d give them the equivalent of a couple of dollars and in return, the vendor would lop off the top of the coconut with a machete and give you a straw. The cold coconut milk was delicious. After you had consumed the milk, you could go back to the vendor who would remove the outer husk and split the coconut for you to allow you to eat the meat. Oh my was all of that good!

Don’t get me wrong. I love Nancy Classics. But I think Aunt Fritzi should have said “please” in the first panel….

I don’t think you can thump a coconut like you do a watermelon.
