I had begun to re-read peanuts because @Peanutweeter had reminded how much I loved the strip. However, because the corporate owners of peanuts have their heads up there @$$ I will no longer be reading peanuts
Three great examples of inappropriate behavior by a person that is liable to scare a dog or make Snoopy feel uncomfortable; 1) a direct approach, 2) patting on the top of the head, and 3) hugging/restraint. All three are very likely to make a puppy very unhappy. Don Hanson, CDBC, CPDT-KA.
Don’t any of you remember Shultz’s book “Happiness is a Warm Puppy”? This is a very funny self-parody.Oh, and Hydrohead – there are no greedy corporate owners of the Peanuts strip. It’s still owned by Sparky’s family.Don, those three behaviors would be unsettling to a dog that didn’t know Linus, but Snoopy is familiar with all of the Peanuts kids. He wouldn’t have minded any one of them doing exactly those same things.
Right you are JanCinVV those behaviors are not appropriate for dogs you don’t know but for your own dogs or very familiar dogs who know you well, that’s another story. Of course they would be appropriate and expected, even welcomed by dogs who care about you and whom you love.
Few things in life give me more happiness than hugging a warm puppy…or for that matter a dog of any size. LOVE IT!
I handed down to my younger brother a pink pillow that has Snoopy on it that says “Happiness Is A Warm Puppy” I got it when I was 10 years old..Amazingly ,he still has it considering I got it in 1965.. (sometimes I worry about my brother)
Have YOU hugged YOUR puppy or dog today? If you have one do it. I had to give up my Siberian Husky over six years ago, (because I had to move out of my mother’s house after she passed away in 2002 [I was a fulltime caregiver for her])wish I could still hug him and her:(
@Don Hanson, What do the letters after your post mean? I don’t know what you or anyone else thinks about calling our animal companions “pets” but it is OK with me.
What I DO NOT like is calling the people they live with “Masters” . Really, I think I am more of a “Gurardian” than anything else with the possible exception of being a parent of a fuzzy child who walks on all fours and is verbally challenged.
This is a good example of something Linus would say. Of course, he would question the concept of Happiness is a Warm Puppy, he has to carry around a blanket to make him happy!

@hydrohead: what’s this about the corporate owners of Peanuts? How does that spoil reading the strip? Not as if you have to pay to see it.
