When I was a kid, I anxiously awaited the daily mail delivery. I was always looking for the next issue of some comic or kids’ magazine, or some cereal premium I’d sent for with a box coupon, or some penpal letter.
But for reasons I couldn’t guess, Pete the Postman’s delivery vehicle would often pause in the middle of the next block up from our house… for what seemed like the loooooongest time.
I remember asking my mother why Mr. Pete always stopped at the widow Smith’s house all the time. I also remember a pause, a small smile, and her answer.
" Oh, it’s his break time. She makes him a cup of coffee."
