    You’re not much of an academic I see, Miss Patty. I can see either waitressing or working at a fast food joint in your future. :/

    If you ask me, open book tests are more representative of reality, even back then. What geographer would ever try to label a map without a reference on hand?

    I’m glad my tests are open-book, I’d be doomed if they weren’t

    After 50 years I sometimes open my college chemistry book and see the notes written in the margins for the big final, What an idiot I must have been.

    Fun fact: Data suggests that adv open book test can be just as rigorous as closed book test as long as you are testing at the higher order of thinking rather than memorization.

    Charles was possibly the finest cartoonist we have and his humor speaks to the human experience.

    I don’t think Patty’s gonna have a bright future if she keeps this up.

    The key is to open the book before the test

    I used to give open book tests (math+science), but students complained they too hard, because I felt free to ask about anything in the book. {…it was all part of my cunning plan bwahahaha}

    I had two open book test in college (90’s) and they were the two hardest, most frustrating exams I ever took. My professors tested at a higher level for open book. The second test was voted on by the class, of which, only three of us voted against it. All three of us had previously had open book test, the others had not.

    What is funny is … talk to any teacher right now and they would gladly take a student who was willing to open and read a textbook.

    Of course unless the book only had one page with a single five word sentence on it (that or she was told exactly which page, paragraph on the page, and sentence in the paragraph for each question), she’d still do poorly on the test. I could just picture the quiz being on a chapter covering post Civil War America and in an open book test Peppermint Patty opens to the pre-French and Indian Wars Colonial America chapter.

    I have bad news for you, Patty. The questions on open-book tests are harder than closed book tests. The hardest tests are the take-home tests.

    A few days ago, a comment in another comic reminded me of some courses I had taken. I recalled studying for a exam following a challenging segment of the course, even though the Professor had announced it would be open book. I’m glad I did study. (BTW, I got an “A”).
