The academy’s worse than inferior/ with a terribly ill-lit interior/ but provocative poses/ are what (one supposes)/ make Mister A’s classes superior.

I assume the rope is just there so the model can hold the upraised arm pose for a bit longer than otherwise. (This is a study—if it’s used later for a painting or sculpture, a weapon can be added.)
