Scott’s way is easier. Two weeks ago, Trump’s tax returns were in the news. But instead, all we’re getting is “what-about-ism.”
Also, since other than Christopher Columbus, it’s only confederate statues that are in controversy, Scott is doing a bang-up job of opening himself up for charges of racism…
We can honor flawed people who did great things like Washington, Jefferson and others, who had their flaws but set the stage for future generations to correct those flaws.
But we should not honor evil people specifically for the evil that they did, such as KKKonfederate traitors who engaged in armed rebellion against the United States (one of the explicit definitions of treason in the Constitution) for the purpose of defending the evil of slavery. We should remember their evil in history books, museums and documentaries, not literally put it up on a pedestal of honor.
The first thing that came to my mind when I read this one was “There were some very fine people – on BOTH sides,” spoken by we all know who. I know Carmen represents conservatives, but I really didn’t expect to see that here.
I can’t “Like” today’s strip for all of the reasons you all have so eloquently stated. Well said!
The partisan hack shows his True Colors. Statues are NOT ABOUT HISTORY! Stop spreading this lie. Statues are HONORS They are erected for people we are supposed to venerate. Some people, like “Confederates”, deserve vilification, not veneration. History is written. It isn’t going away any time soon. Time to put Columbus where he belongs: the dustbin of history.
There’s something to be said for not putting any human on a pedestal… But I’m pretty appalled at pulling down Teddy & Abe.

The raging controversy over Confederate statues has impelled Betsy DeVos to Google the Civil War, the Education Secretary confirmed on Thursday.
“People have been going on and on about the Civil War, and I was like, Betsy, what the heck are they talking about, exactly?” DeVos told reporters. “After a certain point, I decided I just had to Google it.”
DeVos said that she was glad that she Googled the Civil War, calling it “an extremely fascinating chapter in American history that people need to find out about.”
“Like President Trump has been saying, the Civil War had sides to it,” she said. “Although I don’t think it had many sides. I only counted two.”
DeVos said that, prior to Googling the Civil War, she believed that parents should have a choice as to whether or not their children learned history in the nation’s schools, “but now I’m starting to rethink that.”
“I guess you might say I’ve gotten bitten by the history bug,” DeVos said, adding that she was about to Google Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and George Washington.
Is this talking about cities and states removing statues or vandalism? I don’t have a problem with cities and states and government removing statues. In that case they aren’t burning history books…erasing references from the Internet…forbidding people to research and study. Statutes in public areas are supposed to honor people. If we choose to no longer honor people who did despicable things…how is that equivalent with erasing history? And the statues being removed legally, that I know of, aren’t people who have a balance of good and bad. They tend to be people who did bad things for bad motivations, but get honored because their actions had an effect of moving mankind in some direction that is historically significant. Should that be recorded, taught and studied? Yes. Should that person be honored? I don’t think so.
If this is about a mob deciding to tear a statue down. That is a crime and vandalism. They should petition their local, state and/or federal government to remove the statue if they want to have it removed.
Hey, Stantisfernotreallygettingitright, if you’re going down the histry lane, then let’s play the when did they erect the statue/why did they erect the statue game, too.
The investigation basically exonerated the Obama team and probably would have hurt Donald Trump’s reelection, so Barr decided to keep it under wraps. This is how the Justice Department works these days: it’s a PR shop for Donald Trump, not an independent agency serving the best interests of the American public.
All sorts of imperfect people did good and bad things throughout history. But by making statues, you imply this imperfect person is more important than all the other imperfect people from that era. Which isn’t true.
If you want to honestly go down that route, then you need to add statues beside each of these imperfect people showing other imperfect people who opposed them. Otherwise you are showing favortism.
I heard a brilliant thought from an independent journalist: The money WASTED on statues of LOSERS, SHOULD be spent on those that cannot afford basic medication.
Tearing down statues does not erase history, we know exactly what Hitler did, what Stalin did, what Cleopatra did. Tearing down statues is like urban renewal, it does not make a city disappear, it gives it a chance to grow more beautiful, to put up new statues, it does not mean the city ceases to be.

Yes, that’s definitely what I think of when I see a statue of a traitor,

“Erasing history”? Quick, better put up some statues of Hitler, or no one will remember World War II.

yeah, it’s not like slave owners and people who fought to keep people in chains didn’t have needs, too…

A-holes in Portland tore down statues of Teddy Roosevelt and Lincoln. C’mon, let’s hear why this illegal vandalism is justified.

Justified? It’s not. Probably more of those maga A-holes disruptors we keep seeing.
What else ain’t justified?
Trump supporters sent pipe bombs to prominent Democrats.
They ran down marchers in Charlottesville.
They killed BLM protestors in Wisconsin.
They murdered 23 people in El Paso.
Now they’ve plotted to kidnap sitting governors.
Which party has a law and order problem?

Yeah, pulling down a statue of Abraham Lincoln while screeching about oppressive colonizers seems a bit…counterproductive.

“Imperfect” people. “Some good” “Some bad”.
And that’s why a statue of them was erected.
.
Does that description fit, say, your parents? Everybody you ever knew?
And your dog?
.
Let’s have statues of the Michigan Liberators.

They waged war against the United States. If you like them we may as well have statues of George the 3rd & Ho Chi Minh.

Their contributions were to fight for slavery. They committed treason against their country. But I guess we should acknowledge their flawed humanity?
Look, there are 8 billion people standing on this world of ours. There is no room for centrists anymore.
