Worked with a manager whose oft heard opinion of a failed project was “ This dog won’t hunt”. That was the death sentence for your project. Time to kill it and move on to the next new idea.
Leaving a dog treat out and expecting the dog not to get it is like leaving the jail cell key within reach of the prisoners and expecting them to not use it.
That dog looks like a golden. He’s anxious to please. He can’t help the retriever part and will be happy to return whatever he stole, if you replace it with a few hugs and treats.
For all the old people here, I would direct you to Night Court. in Season 9, Episode 3, Dan had gotten into some trouble and as punishment he had to start over working as a prosecutor in Dog Law Court. He would read the charges against the dog and the dog’s defense lawyer was always the same: “our Honor, look at this dog! He’s not a bad doggy, he is a good doggy!” And the judge would agree he was a good doggy. Drove Dan crazy!

Of course, that’s what he replied when asked, “Are you a good boy?” But good boys don’t eat where they poop.

There ought to be wiggle marks around his tail. Now that would have made this strip funny!
