I am such an avid Doonesbury reader that I thought I had nothing new to learn, but here I have learned two new important facts: that Duke is not Zonker’s blood uncle and that Duke connected with Earl (and I too had not realized the word play) when Earl showed up at Duke’s “orphanage”.
This actually shows a soft side to Duke. In his semi-comatose state he imagines the son he didn’t realize he had growing into a successful adulthood (as least as Duke visualizes success). Much nicer than dreaming of ways to bump off the nuisance.
Ever since the Matrix I see Duke as Agent Smith. I envision Duke as Agent Smith after Neo has taken care of him at the end – Duke as the broken agent always makes me smile.
Actually I’m a bit shocked by the last panel. Earl never struck me as the type to torture animals. That’s usually an early sign of someone turning into a psychopath.
Starting fires and tormenting animals are two traits associated with children who grow up to be serial killers. It’s not a GUARANTEE, mind you, but they’ve been found to have been part of the childhoods of a large percentage of known serial killers, enough for it to be considered meaningful. If your child is in the habit of starting fires or of tormenting animals, you should take an interest. If your child is in the habit of doing both, you should DEFINITELY take an interest.
Thus, it’s entirely possible that falling under Duke’s influence is the best thing that could have happened to Earl (to say nothing of his potential future murder victims). Roll THAT one around in your head for a while…
I’m impressed that he CAUGHT a squirrel without getting bitten. I did that ONCE when I was a kid, the thing whipped around and bit me on my finger. Never did it again! :D

If Earl, who has never met his father before, is so like Duke, how come Zonker, who is Duke’s nephew and grew up with him, is nothing like him?

I’ve always loved Trudeau’s strips. Own his books. Vicious animal cruelty makes me ill. Bye, Trudeau.
