Ali. When she moved in to my house she appointed herself “door monitor”, hiding behind the open door and batting at any cat that came in. She had the thickest fur and tail I have ever known on any cat – and her mother was a skinny siamese!
I had one. His name was Blackie (so clever!), and he was one if the best cats I ever had! Purred up a storm, and he knew that his job was to come to bed with me—until I went to sleep. Then he was off (only to be found on my father’s head in the morning)…Whadda cat!
Black cats are wonderful. Midnight reminds me of our boy, he is an absolute joy and has an epic purr <3. His mother’s previous “owner” wanted her and her kittens euthanized. I’m so grateful to the organization that rescued them, and their marvelous foster family. His adoption fee was the best money I’ve ever spent.
I have never considered a black cat to be bad luck. Then again, I have never been staff to a black cat, either.
However! There’s a mostly black tuxedo boy who has been scoping out our place (and trying to see if he can supplant our Tom Dooley) for the past 4 or 5 months. I think he’s wearing down Tom Dooley and winning Hubbie’s heart.
Ordinarily, I’d never hurt him but if he hurts Tom Dooley, he’s toast! The pine trees on our 1/3 acre plantation gives me ammunition enough.
Currently, Molly, Bella, and yeah, Blackie! :-D Found him under a tree when he was about 2 weeks old, eyes weren’t even open yet. Bottle fed him and he’s been with us ever since. Ironically, he and Bella have white paws and a white patch on their chests, but they are other wise all black.
I got curious and did a search to find out why black cats most often have white patches. The reason is kind of sad. They are the survivors of the atrocities committed against black cats during the middle ages.
“It was believed that if a black cat had a white patch of fur on it’s chest that they were saved from being possessed and the presence of white fur, no matter how small, was a representation of holiness. The people in history believed that if the patch was present the cat was kissed by angels or was touched by God. Since then this white patch often found in black cats was named “An angel’s kiss” or ‘God’s thumbprint.’ It was a form of unnatural selection, a result of the prosecution of a large number of jet black cats. Their numbers grew thin while the population of their white marked relatives increased over time.”
We had Shadow. Black longhair with black stripes. 22 pounds of energetic muscle and very affectionate, he’d come up with tricks all on his own for his treats. He and his littermates were born in our garage. When we took them in to be fixed, they liked living inside with us and stayed. Sigh… miss him…

Hi Midnight, I’m glad to meet you. You look a lot like my mini-panther, Akiro, but your locket is more stylish (shh – don’t tell him).

I really fear for the welfare of Black Cats around Halloween. There are a lot of inhumane Humans out there. Please help protect the cats. (Any Color
