That day that Linus mentioned was December 28, 1973— eighth grade for me. I wasn’t worried about the Kohouch-a-ma-thingy; girls were starting to get my attention!
Wikipedia says that Comet Kohoutek was last seen 28 December 1973, going on to say, ‘Comet Kohoutek is a long-period comet; its previous apparition was about 150,000 years ago, and its next apparition will be in about 75,000 years.’
I wasn’t around then, and I doubt I’ll be here for its next visit, too! B^D
There was so much advance hype about how spectacular Kohoutek was going to be that someone actually wrote a pretty good song about it, which Burl Ives recorded and even sang on the Tonight Show. It did not live up to the advance publicity, in the US at least, and I’m surprised to learn from *docachon*’s comment that it made more of an impression in Vietnam.
Funny, the first thing I saw was that large, irregularly shaped rock-like object in the second cel. I thought I had somehow opened the wrong comic strip!
So this was December 13, 1973? Fifteen days would have put it at December 28th of that year, which was when Kohoutek’s comet was at it’s perihelion (nearest point) to the sun.
In the summer of 1957 I was between grades 7 and 8. That summer I received a phone call from my 6th grade teacher, who recalled my interest in astronomy, and informed me where to look in the night sky to se Mrkos, a comet visible in the northern hemisphere that summer.
Such teachers impact lives of their students. I went on to become a chemical engineer with Allied Chemical. Had it not been for this dedicated teacher, interested in pricking my latent interest, perhaps I never would have been as deeply committed to science as I had become. His name is Paul Osborne.

I don’t remember being able to see Kohoutek during the day — I don’t even remember seeing it at night.

120,700,800 kilometers still seems pretty close to Snoopy & Woodstock; don’t want to take any chances

I remember the Kohoutek, back in 1973/1974. It was a big flop. Quite unusual for the strip to mention current events though.

Reminds me of the ‘Pearls Before Swine’ when Pig misunderstood that it would take a long time for a comet to strike the earth.

I remember seeing it when I was 13. It was quite a sight in Viet Nam. Everybody there said it was a bad Omen.

How often does it come by? I’d like to know when a comet might say hi on my birthday. Can I then claim it as my sign?

And she jumped like a fish
Like a flying friend, you were gone
Like Kohoutek, can’t forget that

A man named Kohoutek did say,
“A great comet is coming our way!”
But folks were distraught,
When they saw just a dot,
And they laugh at him still to this day.
From a Funky Winkerbean comic at the time – Les was writing poetry. I can’t believe I still remember it!
