I have a VCR that has never ever had its time set. I’m compulsive enough that I always made sure everything was set—and VCRs had to record on the timer, so I was always trying to find a way to agree with broadcasters on the time. Now that none of that matters, I’ve let this machine quietly display “SET CLOCK” every moment, because it doesn’t blink, and I just love the fact that it doesn’t matter. My clocks are right: I don’t set them ahead in the spring. I’m retired: I don’t care if I’m an hour late.

I can reset the clocks, but I can’t reset the cat and the dogs. They’ll be going off at what was 4:45 a.m. up till today.
