Gene Conley was quite the character during his career, and in 1962, while in New York after a 13 to 3 lost to the Yankees, he and his pal Pumpsie Green went AWOL from the Red Sox, with Conley trying to board a flight to Israel.

Harry Peter “Bud” Grant Jr. (born May 20, 1927) is a former head coach and player of American football, Canadian football, and a former basketball player in the NBA. Grant served as the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League (NFL) for 18 seasons; he was the team’s second (1967–83) and fourth (1985) head coach, leading them to four Super Bowl appearances, 11 division titles, one league championship and three NFC conference championships. Before coaching the Vikings, he was the head coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League (CFL) for ten seasons, winning the Grey Cup four times. Grant is the most successful coach in Vikings history, and the third most successful professional football coach overall (behind Don Shula and George Halas), with a combined 283 wins in the NFL and CFL.3 Grant was elected to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 19834 and to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1994.5 He was the first coach to guide teams to the Grey Cup and the Super Bowl, the only other being Marv Levy.

Grant attended the University of Minnesota and was a three-sport athlete, in football, basketball, and baseball. After college, he played for the Minneapolis Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL, and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL. A statue of Grant stands in front of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ current stadium, Investors Group Field.

Kevin Joseph Aloysius “Chuck” Connors (April 10, 1921 – November 10, 1992) was an American actor, writer, and professional basketball and baseball player. He is one of only 13 athletes in the history of American professional sports to have played both Major League Baseball (Chicago Cubs, 1951) and in the National Basketball Association (Boston Celtics 1947–48). With a 40-year film and television career, he is best known for his five-year role as Lucas McCain in the highly rated ABC series The Rifleman (1958–63). Even though he was out of professional sports, Conners played a significant role in ending the Drysdale-Koufax holdout in 1966.

Donald Eugene Conley (November 10, 1930 – July 4, 2017) was a Major League Baseball pitcher who played 11 seasons from 1952 to 1963 for four teams. Conley also played forward in the 1952–53 season and from 1958 to 1964 for two teams in the National Basketball Association. He is best known for being one of only two people (the other being Otto Graham–1946 NBL and AAFC Championship, plus three more AAFC and three NFL championships) to win championships in two of the four major American sports, one with the Milwaukee Braves in the 1957 World Series and three Boston Celtics championships from 1959 to 1961.Conley is one of 13 athletes to have played in both the National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball. The thirteen are: Danny Ainge, Frank Baumholtz, Conley, Chuck Connors, Dave DeBusschere, Johnny Gee, Dick Groat, Steve Hamilton, Mark Hendrickson, Cotton Nash, Ron Reed, Dick Ricketts and Howie Schultz.

I was channel surfing, and I saw someone say “All red foxes, no matter what color, have white at the tip of the tail.” He then asked kids he was talking to if they had noticed he said red foxes come in different colors. They’re not all red.

Its muzzle’s less blunt and less prominent, too.

Its eyes are spread out more and not as deep set.

The gestalt looks more dog-like to me and to you.

The grizzly bear’s ears are more rounded and shorter,

Its fur long and fuzzy, not least on the face.

Its muscular shoulders for digging provide it

A hump; on all fours, that’s the uppermost place.

In contrast, the black bear’s rear end is the acme.

It also has darker and much shorter claws

To break rotten logs when it’s hunting for insects,

As well as climb trees (does the thought give you pause?).

The grizzly’s front feet will leave tracks not as rounded,

With pads whose proportions tend more to be wide.

Now, hunters of black bears, take care which you shoot at.

The rest of us humans would much rather hide.
